Benefits of Light-burned Magnesium Powder in Industrial Practice

Basic research found that light-burned magnesia powder has obvious advantages in reducing magnesium content. In November 2012, Shougang Jingtang pellets produced magnesia pellets, which provided conditions for sintering magnesium content reduction. In February 2013, researchers carried out an industrial test of reducing MgO in Jingtang sintering plant of Shougang. The results showed that the MgO content of sinter was gradually reduced from 1.8% to 1.5%. Combining with the adjustment of the structure of ore powder, the grade of sinter was raised from 55.95% to 56.48%. After September 2013, the flux containing Mg was basically discontinued in Jingtang sintering plant of Shougang. After magnesium reduction, the sintering index improved obviously: the proportion of sinter < 10mm decreased from 20.28% to 17.85%, the reducibility increased from 80.15% to 84.7%, the sinter droplet performance improved significantly, and the S characteristic value of sinter decreased from 262 kPa (?) to 87 kPa (?) C.



After more than one year's industrial practice, the MgO content of Jingtang sinter in Shougang has stabilized at 1.4%~1.5% in 2014, which is at the lowest level in large sintering plants in China, and further reached 1.35% in October 2014.

 Experts believe that the successful practice of magnesium reduction by sintering has great application prospects in China. Two main application schemes can be considered in iron and steel enterprises: one is to reduce MgO content in sinter slag properly to contribute to blast furnace concentrate; the other is to reduce the proportion of sintering flux containing MgO, and correspondingly add appropriate MgO additive in pellet, transferring MgO content of sinter to pellet. In order to improve the metallurgical and droplet properties of the comprehensive burden, the production of low-magnesium sinter and high-magnesium pellet is used to improve the technical and economic indexes of blast furnace.
